125 Years Ago – 1896
The 8th annual Cherokee County Fair held in Marcus last week was a success. The weather was magnificent and the exhibits were extensive.The ballgames and races were good and a large display of machinery by Barnes and Bird and Collins and Donner had a lot of visitors.
110 Years Ago – 1901
Garvin and Gurley have two car loads of potatoes on the track, selling at $1.10 per bushel.
Mr. Kennedy who had paid $300 down on the P.N. Brown farm has notified Brown he cannot take the [place, thus losing his $300.
Lightning struck the Simpson Bethel School Friday afternoon while school was in session. It demolished the stove pipe and chimney. A Wirt boy and the son of J. E. McGee were knocked to the floor and were unconscious for a while. Both have recovered.
115 Years Ago – 1906
Mrs. H. Mich advertises a grand display of Fall and Winter hats in her establishment.
H.M. Ferrin, W.E. Simons, Robert Miller, John Woodall, Ross Simons and Eddie Johnson have put in cement feeding floors.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Henry Frerichs, a farmer and father of nine children, was found dead in his Ford car Saturday morning near his farm 6 miles west of Marcus. Details are not complete. He is a brother of Herman Frerichs, nmanager of Remsen Elevator.
A fire of unknown origin consumed the 60X60 ft. barn, 880 tons of hay, an elevator, feed bunk and a wagon on the Henry Wilson farm occupied by Lloyd Barnes.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Mrs. Adam Pfeifer raised a huge cucumber on their farm northeast of Marcus that measured 16 1/2 inches long, was 12 3/4 inches in circumference and weighed 5 1/4 pounds.
Many Marcus people drove to the Million Dollar Corner near Hawarden to view the damage done by flood waters that washed out 2 bridges and were 5 feet tall.
Vince McClintock is driving a new Essex six coach purchased from Nagle Bros.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Lighning damaged the Cliff Means home Tuesday evening. Light sockets were torn from the walls and walls were damaged. It is thought that it entered the home through the electrical wires.
Marcus opened its football season at Wilken’s field and defeated Washta 7-0. Birch and Kirchoff played good defense.
85 Years Ago -1936
In a recent issue, It should have read that Vernita Kinzel of Cleghorn and Hillis Carris were wed August 22.
Marcus Public High School has an enrollment of 177.
Helen Heinis and Orville Smith were married Wednesday, August 12 at Elk Point, SD. They will make their home in Cherokee.
Miss Cora Minor departed for a months visit in Los Angeles and Long Beach, CA. Mabel Lothes wil replace her at the telephone office during her absence.
Cleghorn football boys defeated the Sutherland team at Sutherland 14-7 Friday evening.
80 Years Ago – 1941
N.T. Wells is confined to his home as he is failing. He will be 96 years old October 25.
Rev. and Mrs. G.A. Osborn will be honored at a farewell dinner Friday evening in the local Methodist Church. They will leave for their new home in Mapleton Tuesday.
75 Years Ago -1946
Marcus has a dog poisoner operating here. Four dogs have died from dog poisoning since Sept. 19. Ed Evans family has lost 2 dogs, and the Carl Reed and the Harold Stientjes families have each lost one.
Myrna Ament, a sophomore at the University of Iowa, has been elected president of the Eastlawn association, the governing body of the women’s dormitory at the University.
70 Years Ago – 1951
A heavy frost hit this area the last Friday in September and damaged some corn and beans. About 25% of the corn and 75% of the beans in northwest Iowa were damaged.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Carley sold their home to the George Rabels. The Carleys will sell their furniture and plan to travel for about a year through the southwestern states. They will make their home in Marcus on their return.
65 Years Ago – 1956
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hazen of Cleghorn were honored at a farewell party by friends and neighbors as they will soon move to Marcus.
Brian Nelson was honored on his first birthday at a dinner Sunday hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Claude Grey with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Nelson. also present.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Sandra Sangwin, bride-elect of Melvin Schlenger, was honored at a bridal shower in Mt. Pleasant Church.
“The Absent-minded Professor” starring Fred MacMurray is showing in the Marland.
55 Years Ago – 1966
The 1967 Chevrolets will go on display at Nagles Thursday, Sept. 29th including a new Camaro. Coffee and doughnuts will be served and the ladies will receive a souvenir.
The Solon of Beauty will open for business Sept. 30th. Mrs. Jim (Bev) Nielsen is the owner and it is in the McGivern Building.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Gayle Jean McIntosh of Cleghorn and William E. Cadwallader of San Diego, CA are planning a November 27th wedding. She is a senior at Iowa State University and he graduated from there and is employed in San Diego.
IGA Touchdown specials include a 2 lb. box of Velveeta Cheese -99¢; Morrell bacon-59¢ lb; a 20lb. bag of Red River Valley Red Potatoes- 59¢ and 3 loaves of IGA sandwich bread – $1.00.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Mrs. Clara Williams Brownmiller, 94, passed away Sept. 21 after a long illness. Services were in the Methodist Church with burial in Marcus-Amherst Cemetery. Survivors include 4 sons and 3 daughters.
Mr. and Mrs. Doug Bierman of Marcus are the parents of a son, born Sep. 17. He weighed 8 lbs. 4 oz. and is named Justin Douglas.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Homecoming Royalty at Meriden-Cleghorn include Mia Bush, Paula Lux, Nancy Nelson, Bob Rassel, Eugene Rupp amd Brian Specht.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Lonnie and Karen Gries announce the opening of The Pizza Ranch at 109 N. Main St. in Marcus, the former Iowa Liquor Store. It will be open from 11:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. Friday and Sat.
