125 Years Ago – 1896
Large amounts of corn, barley and oats were marketed here Monday and Tuesday. A lot of hogs and cattle were shipped to Chicago from here this week.
A. G. Georges has been granted a permit to sell intoxicating liquors for medical purposes.
Watermelons and all kinds of vegetables are plentiful in the local markets.
110 Years Ago – 1901
Sammy Chatterton loaded his printing outfit on a wagon early Friday morning and drove to Pierson. Rumor has it that he has leased the Enterprise there.
J.J. Jungers has leased the Marcus House and is open for business.
The west side of our Main Street is being covered with 10 feet wide cement sidewalks.
P.N. Brown sold his farm south of town to a man named Kennedy for $100 per acre.
115 Years Ago – 1906
Sjostrom Bros. sent carloads of chickens to Chicago Tuesday evening. Each car holds 4,000. Ernst Sjostrom and Len Lorenson accompanied them.
Joe Meter and gang of workmen are repairing the water tower.
105 Years Ago – 1916
The new Holy Name Catholic Church, school and parsonage and garage were dedicated last Thursday, Sept. 14. W.L. Steele was the architect and D.H.Shanahan of Chicago did the stained glass windows which were donated by church famlies. There are 140 families in the Parish and the church will seat 750 people. It measures 55X118 ft, and is 52 ft high. Over 600 dinners were served at the dedication. Resident priest is Father Edward O’’Reilly of County Cavan, Ireland.
Delbert Hodgen of Tilden Twp. is driving a new Kissel auto and he has the agency for the vehicles.
The Collins Bros. departed Monday to play dances in Nebraska this week and next week they will be at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Will McIntosh and Blaine Levitt of Cleghorn came home with a nice bunch of fish caught on a trip to Minnesota.
Lawrence Radcliffe sold his fine modern bungalow to Rae Peters with possession November 1st. It is only 7 years old and built at a cost of $12,000 in the Radcliffe Addition.
Miss Ruth Geringer and cousin, Esther Holtgrewe of Remsen and Irene Ebert of Calumet returned home after spending 4 weeks visiting relatives in Chicago.
90 Years Ago – 1931
John Williams is captain of the Golden Eagles MHS football team. They open at home vs Washta and have an 8 game schedule. Cleghorn will be the last game here on Thanksgiving Day.
Mrs. August F. Johnson (Mathilda) 86, passed away Saturday and was buried Monday afternoon from Carmel Lutheran Church. She was born in Laxarly, Sweden and is survived by 3 sons. Burial was in Marcus-Amherst Cemetery.
85 Years Ago -1936
The Marcus Golden Eagles defeated Akron football team 19-6 on their turf. Ben Radcliffe returned a kick-off for a touchdown. “ Swede”Anderson and Beryl Gross joined Ben in some long runs.
Mrs. Fred Mossman departed for Winfield, KS to attend the wedding of their daughter, Mildred, to William Barnard. They will make their home in Onawa.
John Barry, Dr. Du Bois and Oscar Anderson, are driving new V-8 Fords purchased from Peters Bros.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Marcus Gridders defeated Anthon 19-0 here. Ronald Dorr completed passes to Lee Barnes and Tick Mossman for the first two touchdowns and Barnes made a lateral pass to Jr. Franck for the final score.
Miss Sena Hansen and 20 high school students visited the local public library to receive instructions on how to use the “Readers Guide”. Miss Hansen is the Normal Training Critic at Marcus Public School.
Bobby Reed is at home this week enjoying a case of chicken pox.
75 Years Ago -1946
Miss Ann Berendes, formerly of Marcus, now of Remsen and Harry Beck of Remsen were married recently in Remsen St. Mary’s Church. Ann is a rural school teacher and Harry served 31 months in the service. He is now a member of the J.P. Beck Mercantile.
Donald Hendrickson, Dean Barnes and Clarence Beck departed Monday morning for Ames where they will attend Iowa State College.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Pfc. Donald Hendrickson departed for Seattle, WA after spending a 15 day furlough in the parental Harry Hendrickson home. He is to report to Camp Lawton for special assignment. He is a fast code radio operator for the army.
Lloyd Brown stood out on offense and defense as the Marcus Eagles defeated Correctionville on their field 19-12. Dick Booth and John Neir played well at ends and the whole team tackled well.
65 Years Ago – 1956
Floyd and M.J. Nagle and Melvyn Greene attended the new showing of the 1957 Chevrolet at Des Moines this week. It will go on display at Nagle Chevrolet in Marcus October 19th.
Mrs. John Sand and Florence Sand took Mary Sand to Dubuque Friday where she will be a junior at Clark College.
Gene’s Trading Post in Marcus held a Going Out Of Business Sale Sunday, September 23 at its location.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Edna Ferber’s “Cimarron” is showing in the local Marland starring Glenn Ford, Maria Schell and Anne Baxter.
Rita Frederes of Alton and Jerry Weimer of Marcus were united in marriage in St. Mary’s Church at Alton last week. They will make their home in Lincoln, NE where he is a member of the Air Force.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Sfc. Lavern Heesch retired from the Army after 16 years there and 4 years in the Navy. He and his wife will make their home in San Francisco, CA.
Rocky Bork, Tom Gates, Barry Hagey and David Grage were September Rotary guests.
Clarence Jones, 64, passed away suddenly in his Cleghorn home Thursday, Sept. 15. He had taugtht in the school there for 23 years. Survivors include his widow, 3 daughters, a brother and 10 grandchildren. Services were held in Cleghorn with burial in Marcus-Amherst Cemetery.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Mrs. Alvina Kosse Gilbert, 45, formerly of Marcus and now of Sioux City, died in a crash on a Pennslyvania Turnpike. Her daughter, Linda Ann, was driving the car. Alvina is survived by her 2 daughters, 3 sons, her mother of Marcus, 3 sisters and 2 brothers. Services were held in Cherokee Immaculate Catholic Church with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Ground breaking ceremonies were held Sunday at the site of the Paullina Beef Processing Plant to be built northeast of Paullina by Marlin VerSteeg and Al Koeningsfeld, former owners of the Cleghorn Lockers. It will have a capacity of processing 100 head of cattle daily. April 1, 1977 is the tentative opening date.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Meriden-Cleghorn reports a total enrollment of 261 this fall.
Marcus Homecoming game will be Friday night, Sept. 25 vs Sgt. Bluff.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Area IV Sellers placed # 1 at the Iowa State Fair, compiling 58 out of a possible 60 points. Each of the ladies received a set of Medical Encyclopedias. They were guests at the Sioux City Senior Citizens’ Center Sept. 8th and met Governor Branstad. The team was composed of Nell Riser, Moville; Elizabeth Hallowell, Hornick; Stella Gundel, Merrill and yours truly of Marcus.
30 Years Ago – 1991
MMC High School received new desks in the Math room, replacing desks that were over 25 years old. A long term plan will replace all the desks in the school.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Pat’s Body Shop and Automotive Sales held an Open House Saturday, Sept. 28 in their new building a mile south of Marcus on Hwy.#143.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Kevin Hart is the new superintendent at MMC and has a 3 year contract. He has moved here from Hinton.
