Cherokee County Zoning Board Mulls Wind/Solar Ordinance

The Cherokee County Zoning Board met Thursday September 14 to consider an ordinance addressing the orderly development of commercial wind and solar power in Cherokee County. Sample ordinances from Johnson and Mills Counties were distributed.
Discussion items for inclusion in the ordinance were maximum area and setbacks. Board members also looked at maximum height and rezoning projects, with the question asked, ÒWhere do we stop?Ó Other consideration were given to conditional use permits, comparison of wind to solar and land use and access. The board also discussed neighbor infringement verses private property rights with the suggestion that a neighbor signs off on a project.
Sarah Tracy, Cherokee County Engineer serves as the Zoning Administrator and Steve Zarr is the Assistant Administrator. Board members are Lisa Tressler, newly elected chair, Tim Ragsdale, Ken Hardy, Marla Doss and Robin Hunt. There is 1 vacancy. Any Cherokee County resident living outside an incorporated can apply to fill the position.
